Virginia Bar Association cancels gubernatorial debate after candidates don’t RSVP
The Virginia Bar Association has canceled its scheduled July 19 gubernatorial debate after neither candidate accepted an invitation before the organization’s June 9 deadline. The VBA said April 28 that it invited the two nominees, Democrat former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, to debate during the association’s summer meeting at the Omni Homestead Resort in Bath County. The VBA hosted debates for the statewide races for governor and U.S. senator from 1985 to 2020.
Fauquier Planning Commission recommends denial of Gigaland data center project in Remington
The Fauquier County Planning Commission voted 4-1 Wednesday night to recommend denial of a proposal for a data center campus near Remington. The vote followed a three-hour public hearing that drew significant community interest. The application, known as Gigaland, seeks approval for a 2.2-million-square-foot data center complex spanning 202 acres south of Lucky Hill Road, just outside Remington town limits. The project would include seven two-story buildings up to 80 feet in height — comprising a 65-foot structure with a 15-foot parapet — alongside public water infrastructure such as a water treatment facility, an aboveground water storage tank, two wells and four electrical substations.
Clean Virginia looks for change with entire Democratic ticket as allies
After hard-fought primaries for lieutenant governor and attorney general — where Clean Virginia and Dominion Energy poured money into opposing candidates — Clean Virginia now backs the entire Democratic ticket, an unprecedented shift that the group hopes will weaken Dominion’s political influence. Clean Virginia, a nonprofit that advocates for clean government and clean energy by fighting what it terms utility monopoly corruption in Virginia politics, donated $957,543 directly to statewide candidates this year, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Dominion, the state’s largest public utility, donated $1.27 million to their candidates this year.

The topic Democrats zeroed in on at Friday’s rally outside City Hall is one with ties to Charlottesville and strong opinions on both sides: same-sex marriage. “It’s fundamental,” Llezelle Dugger, the Clerk of Court for Charlottesville’s Circuit Court, told 29News. “It’s a fundamental right for us.”

Sen. Tim Kaine says President Trump is waging ‘unconstitutional’ war against Iran
Sen. Tim Kaine said Sunday that it was “unconstitutional” for President Trump to launch a military strike against Iran without congressional approval. Mr. Kaine, Virginia Democrat and a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, said Mr. Trump cannot rely on the 2001 Authorization of Military Force, which was enacted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and he expects Congress to vote on a new AUMF this week. “We will have all members of the Senate have to declare whether or not the U.S. should be at war with Iran,” Mr. Kaine said on “Fox News Sunday.” “It is unconstitutional for a president to initiate a war like this without Congress. Every member of Congress needs to vote on this.”
Vital sites in Williamsburg’s Black history take steps forward on Juneteenth
Two important sites in Williamsburg’s Black history took the spotlight on Thursday as the region observed the holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. Dozens of people gathered on Nassau Street on Juneteenth for a groundbreaking ceremony that will kick off the rebuilding of one of the nation’s oldest Black churches. Nearby, visitors were welcomed inside the Bray School, one of the oldest surviving schools for Black children that has been recreated to look as it did in the 18th century.
Shields, Deane, Redican, Broening, Quach and Miller: How that ‘big, beautiful bill’ discards RVA’s children
On May 21, the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made deep cuts to the country’s social safety net. The list of programs that would be changed and/or reduced is steep and significant: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and many others. If the bill passes the Senate, the impact would be enormous and fall mainly on low income families, caregivers and children. The “one big beautiful bill” would significantly cost-shift the funding of these programs to the states.
