Oyster tax change moves forward in Virginia House

By KATHY ADAMS, Virginian-Pilot (Metered Paywall - 2 articles a month)

A measure to overhaul the state's oyster replenishment tax is moving forward in the House of Delegates. State law requires watermen harvesting oysters from public waters to pay between 5 cents and 50 cents per bushel, depending on the bushels' selling price. The reporting system is outdated and onerous, and some harvesters choose to ignore it, said Del. Margaret Ransone, R-Kinsale.
