In addition to the high-profile race for governor and other statewide races, Virginia voters will be asked to weigh in on a flurry of competitive races farther down the ballot: House of Delegate seats are also up for grabs Tuesday. This election features more competitive House races than at any time in the past two decades, and analysts say the usually local, low-key races are shaping up to be an early barometer of the national political climate nearly a year into Donald Trump’s presidency.

On paper, the 67th House District seems like solidly blue territory. Democrat Hillary Clinton won it with almost 60 percent of the vote. But Republican Del. Jim LeMunyon (R-67) has been in office for four terms, a time that has seen this slice of Northern Virginia trending increasingly toward the Democratic Party. That puts this district in the spotlight as one of the most competitive House of Delegates races in Virginia, and it’s one reason supporters of Democrat Karrie Delaney say she's got a shot at ousting LeMunyon.

In less than a month, Virginia voters will pick 100 people to represent them in the House of Delegates, races that will be closely watched as an early referendum on President Donald Trump's first year in office. Donald Trump's surprise election to the presidency generated the Women's March protest nationally and a wave of first-time Democratic candidates for office in Virginia. Democrats hope that translates into making gains against the 66-34 Republican majority in the state House of Delegates on Nov. 7, when all 100 seats are up for election.

Karrie Delaney knows a thing or two about Republican politics. Back in 2004, she was appointed to the West Melbourne City Council in Florida. The following year, according to public records in the Sunshine State, she registered as a Republican. But she lost the election that year after she voted higher taxes. Now she’s running as a Democrat against four-term incumbent Del. Jim LeMunyon (R-67),

Karrie Delaney, Hannah Risheq and John Carey are competing in the Democratic primary for a House of Delegates seat in Fairfax County. In these anti-establishment times in which Democrats still stunned by Donald Trump’s surprise election to the presidency are searching for newness, Risheq is bringing up a potential negative about Delaney: She was registered as a Republican in Florida, where she previously lived. House District 67 is held by moderate Republican Del. James M. LeMunyon.
