EVMS chief's event raised cash for Del. Chris Jones

A month before the Nov. 8 state legislative election, Harry Lester, president of Eastern Virginia Medical School, hosted a luncheon at Norfolk's Town Point Club for Del. Chris Jones, R-Suffolk, a key architect of the state budget. "While this is not an official fundraiser, if you are inclined to support Chris this would be a good opportunity to personally deliver a check to him," Lester wrote in an Oct. 4 email to the dozen local movers and shakers he invited.

Hampton Roads Chamber political arm endorses select incumbents

Incumbents dominate a list of legislative endorsements made by the political arm of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce of Commerce. Among those recently endorsed by the Hampton Roads Business Political Action Committee are five state senators and 11 state delegates. The list includes more Republicans than Democrats but features some from both parties, and it omits several incumbents seeking re-election this year.

GOP offers one election message, lobbyist hear another

Some key members of the House Republican Caucus met with a group of lobbyists at the exclusive Commonwealth Club in Richmond earlier this week for what ostensibly was an update about legislative races in fall. But the message delivered by the GOP at the gathering has been interpreted by some in attendance as an appeal to withhold financial support from Democratic candidates. Several participants agreed that the discussion during Monday's hour long luncheon meeting -- it was attended by House Speaker William Howell and Del. Chris Jones of Suffolk, among others -- centered on several contested races for the state House and Senate this year.
