Virginia Beach task force calls for accountability from event producers

City-sponsored festivals and events should provide an accounting of funds in order to continue to receive support, a festival task force recommended to the City Council Tuesday. It was one of many priorities the group laid out in a report meant to guide policies on city-sponsored events as well as how Oceanfront public parks are used throughout the year. The council-appointed 90-day Festival Task Force reviewed the cost-benefit of city sponsorships as Virginia Beach continues to ramp up its annual event lineup at the Oceanfront.

Richmond residents rally for affordable housing

More than 100 Richmond residents came out Tuesday evening to demand the City Council address affordable housing in the city. The rally, hosted by the New Virginia Majority, a locally based political activism organization, comes following a recent uptick in eviction rates in Richmond. In a plea to Richmond officials, members of the organization called for an immediate stop to evictions and additional funding for affordable housing efforts.

Spotsylvania School Board rep charged with assault of fellow board member

A Spotsylvania County School board representative was served a warrant Tuesday morning on charges of assault and battery of a fellow board member. The charge is related to Nicole Cole of the Battlefield District allegedly slamming a door into the shoulder of Lee Hill District representative Lisa Phelps and allegedly extending her leg to trip Phelps. Phelps said in a telephone interview that the incident occurred during closed session of the May 20 meeting.

Loudoun County considers cost of changing school names linked to slavery, Confederacy

On Tuesday night, the Loudoun County School Board was briefed on the potential cost of renaming nine schools a committee identified as named for people, places or ideas related to slavery or the Confederacy. That cost, according to the district, ranges between $1.1-1.25 million.

PETA files complaint against EVMS, citing abuse in baboon research

Animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has filed a complaint against Eastern Virginia Medical School, alleging abuse against baboons that went through Caesarian sections for pregnancy research. Norfolk-based PETA sent the complaint to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office last week, and the letter states the school has a “longstanding, willful disregard of the well being of animals within its custody.” The school, however, has maintained that the animals were always cared for, and the research is vital for maternal and baby care.

State electoral board delays vote on removing Charles City County official

The Virginia State Board of Elections voted to delay the process of removing a member of the Charles City County Electoral Board Tuesday, after local officials alleged partisan behavior and “dereliction of duty.” Earlier this month, the Charles City elections board leadership and the county’s general registrar requested the state ask a court to remove Maria Anne Kinney, a Republican who is the county electoral board’s secretary.

Democrats Plan $100 Million Push on Abortion Rights to Win House

The super PAC supporting Democrats’ effort to win back the House majority is launching a $100 million fund focused on abortion rights, the latest sign that the party is leaning heavily on the issue this fall to help counter concerns about the economy and immigration policy. In a memo to donors, the House Majority PAC outlined the Reproductive Freedom Accountability Fund, which it said will be spent in swing districts across the country for advertising and voter mobilization. The fund will also focus on voter outreach in House districts where there aren’t competitive presidential or Senate races, such as in New York, California, Oregon, Washington and Virginia.

Trump endorses McGuire in fiercely fought GOP primary in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District

With just three weeks until the June 18 primary elections, former President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed state Sen. John McGuire, R-Goochland County, in his challenge to Rep. Bob Good, R-Campbell County, the incumbent in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. “Bob Good is BAD FOR VIRGINIA, AND BAD FOR THE USA,” Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed the Republican opponent of a Virginia congressman who leads the hard-right House Freedom Caucus in what could be a defining moment in the GOP primary set for June 18. The endorsement of John McGuire, a state senator, provides a jolt of momentum for the challenger and could be difficult for the incumbent, two-term Rep. Bob Good, to overcome. The primary is one of the most closely watched in the nation as millions of dollars pour into the race from various Republican-aligned groups.

Miyares helps open outpatient addiction treatment program

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares came to ARS Treatment Center to recognize their efforts in fighting the opioid crisis. “When people come here oftentimes dealing with addiction, in many ways they’ve seen the face of hell,” Miyares said. The Charlottesville Police Department responded to 101 overdoses in 2023. ARS is worried the problem is growing. They opened their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) on Wednesday, which is a new way to treat patients. Miyares named them the silent heroes of his fight against fentanyl.
