Democrats in the 94th House of Delegates District picked Shelly Simonds as their nominee to replace Zack Wittkamp, who withdrew from the race late last month.
Simonds will face Del. David Yancey, R-Newport News, and Libertarian Party candidate Michael D. Bartley in the November election.
One candidate has emerged, hoping to be the Democratic challenger to Del. David Yancey, R-Newport News, and another city resident is seriously considering making a bid as well.
The party has had to reopen its nomination process because candidate Zack Wittkamp withdrew from the race this weekend.
The Democratic Party committee for the 94th House of Delegates district will hold a caucus to select a replacement for Zack Wittkamp, who withdrew from race this weekend, on Aug. 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Plumbers & Steamfitters Union Hall, at 7812 Warwick Blvd, Newport News.
Zack Wittkamp, the Democrat challenging Del. David Yancey, R-Newport News, is dropping out of the race.
Wittkamp said that with a young family -- his daughter is just five -- and two full time jobs, including his role as a partner in two-year-old Tradition Brewing, he simply didn't have the time for the campaign.
"The expectations for fundraising just got in the way," he said.
Zack Wittkamp, a partner in Tradition Brewing Company, is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for the House of Delegates 94th district.
Wittkamp, 40, oversees Tradition's finances and growth iniatitives.
