Old and new faces vie for Central Virginia General Assembly seats

It’s a big year for General Assembly races in Virginia, with every seat in the House of Delegates and the Senate — 140 in all — up for grabs. This November is also the first general election for the newly redrawn House and Senate districts, which were reworked in the wake of the last census. The new plan has split a number of voting precincts between districts. In Albemarle, the Free Bridge precinct is divided between two House districts, while Woodbrook, Jack Jouett and Stony Point precincts are split between Senate districts. Of the 12 races in Central Virginia, half have candidates running unopposed.

Following the money: Culpeper's House of Delegates' candidates

The 30th District incumbent for House of Delegates, representing most of Culpeper County, is unopposed in next month’s election. He has received more than $30,000 so far this year in campaign contributions. In the 18th District delegates’ race, impacting the county’s northern end, two candidates are running for office for the first time in a contest in which the Republican’s contributions outweigh his opponent’s by more than $100,000.

State candidates speak at forum

The struggling economy and unemployment were the main issues discussed Friday at the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce-sponsored General Assembly candidate forum. Four candidates for Virginia Senate and two candidates for House of Delegates answered prepared questions in front of about 75 attendees at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center.
